Seven things you should try or avoid
To maintain a good oral health is a challenge. Here are the seven most common pitfalls you should try and avoid.
1. Brushing? At least twice a day
Although it is considered “normal”, it is without doubt the most important thing to do: brushing your teeth. And not once, but at least twice a day. Brushing your teeth twice a day helps reduce plaque which in return helps reduce harmful bacteria from growing. Almost a quarter of the Dutch population brushes just once a day or sometimes not at all! These are disturbing results. Research has shown that brushing less than twice a day can increase the production of cavities. So be smart and brush those gorgeous teeth
2. The wrong technique
Brushing the right way is just as important. One of the things that goes wrong most frequently is missing spots in the mouth. Be sure you brush all your teeth and lightly brush your gum. We are all rushed and often don’t take our time to take good care of our mouth. But remember: a healthy mouth makes a healthy body. When you don’t remove plaque, inflammation like periodontitis and gingivitis can occur. Brushing your teeth gentle is the best way since brushing too hard will make your gum too soft and more fragile.
3. The right toothbrush
There are so many toothbrushes to choose from these day. From tiny ones to huge items and from hard to ultra soft brushes. We from blue®m recommend to always use a soft or ultra soft brush. This will make sure that our toothpaste, which is a little bit more liquid than you might be used to, can be easily applied on the brush. Moreover, a soft toothbrush protects your gum even better. Reduced gum, which will be developed more easily when brushing with the wrong toothbrush, will be more sensitive for temperature differences (cold/heat). Not only temperature differences, but also softer, more sensitive gum will occur which in return can enhance dental problems.
4. Replace those nasty brushes
We have all done it: brushing our teeth with a toothbrush that we should’ve thrown away a loooong time ago. As soon as the hairs on the brush lose their strength and start splitting it is time to replace your toothbrush. Make sure you always have enough tooth brushes (or heads for electrical brushing) in your home. We advise to replace your toothbrush every three months. Who is feeling very guilty now ;)?
5. The space between your teeth
It doesn’t matter how good or how often you brush your teeth, not every spot is reachable with just a toothbrush. You need an extra hand: use a floss and/or toothpicks. 6. Cakes, candy and soda
The Western diet is for sure the cause of many diseases including tooth decay. Often unnoticed we get a lot of sugar intake. Our nutritionist Laura always advises to read the small letters on the back of the product carton or wrapping and have a very close look at the percentage of sugar. Sugar cannot only be found in the familiar products like cakes, candy and soda, but also in products that ‘look’ healthy. Don’t let yourself be fooled. Sweets, chewing gum with sugar and candy are one of the most harmful products. This is due to the duration these products stay in your mouth. The longer sugar is in your mouth, the sooner you can develop tooth decay and increased risk of developing caries.
7. Missed your appointment?
Even if you think there is nothing wrong with your teeth or dental hygiene, we strongly advise you to still see your dental hygienist and dentist at least once a year. Only a specialist can notice problems in an early stage and “nip it in the bud”.
