How aware are you of your sleeping pattern?

The longer you think about it, the more special it becomes: sleep. We often take it for granted, but actually it’s not at all. Scientists are still doing a lot of research about sleep. Why do we sometimes sleep badly? Why do some people need more sleep than others? Why do we dream? And there are many other interesting questions to think about. Friday March 19 is World Sleep Day. A good time to start working on this interesting subject.  The goal? Becoming aware of your sleeping pattern. Because sleep is essential for a healthy brain and a fit body. In fact, without sufficient sleep, a human being cannot even exist. In this first article, we will talk about our own sleeping pattern.

How (long) do you sleep?

Many people are only aware of their sleeping pattern when it is interrupted. When we are aware that we have slept too few hours, we link low energy, a bad mood, headaches, yawning or poor concentration to a lack of sleep. Did the neighbours have a noisy party until late at night or did you have to get up because of a crying baby? Then the next day we know where our ailments come from. However, we can also sleep too little or not deeply enough without noticing it right away. Physical and mental (vague) problems can then gradually creep in, without us being aware of the cause. A reduced immune system, skin aging, an increased risk of heart problems and diabetes are all possible effects of insufficient sleep.

Pay more attention to your sleep

Do you think you get enough sleep? Or does it just seem that way and would you feel even better in the daytime if you were more well-rested? Once you are in a certain pattern, you often take that pattern for granted. Do you sleep well? Do you wake up well-rested or not? How many hours do you sleep? It can do no harm to pay more attention to your sleeping pattern. For example, ask your partner if you snore, grind your teeth or are very restless during sleep. Do you have an activity tracker or smartwatch? Then you can often monitor your sleeping pattern through a special function or app. Or do an online sleep test and get more grip on your sleep and thus your health.

This was just a kick-off on the topic of sleep. Soon we will discuss further specific causes of sleep problems, among other things. Because a good sleeping pattern is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. At blue®m, we attach great importance to health in its broadest sense.
